The city of Catania
To begin with, it is possible to go along the most important street in Catania, Via Etnea.
With its wonderful baroque-styled palaces and the white and black colours of their "laugh and cry"-styled façades.

The first stop is at the Roman Amphitheatre in Piazza Stesicoro, then walk along Salita di San Giuliano where there is the most expressive street in Catania: Via Crociferi, with its wonderful churches and palaces.
Visit the outside of the old convent of the Frati Benedettini (now university of foreign languages).

Walk down Via Vittorio Emanuele leading to the wonderful Piazza Duomo, where the lava stone statue of the elephant, symbol of Catania, stands in the middle of the square.
Here it is possible to visit the huge Cathedral, Saint Agata’s Church (Patron Saint of Catania); the open-air fish market, famous for its particular colours; Porta Uzeda, a very beautiful lava stone door whose origin is Spanish; the outside of the baroque Palazzo Biscari; the Ursino Castle, now a museum; the little but interesting Greek Theatre.

It is possible to visit Vincenzo Bellini house-museum, one of the greatest Italian composers; the wonderful gardens of the homonymous Villa; on the way home, it is possible to visit the Riviera dei Ciclopi.

(Excursion duration: 4 to 6 hours)
